“What are you doing?” Jill asked as she strode into her parent’s living room carrying a couple of mugs of coffee.
“Jack warned me not to interfere. He saw all the notes we made last night, so I have to stash them somewhere else. We can use your place as our headquarters.” She spread several sheets of paper on the floor and stepped back to study them.
“I’m thinking I should have offered you chamomile tea instead of coffee. I swear this coffee is quivering with anxiety at the thought of being anywhere near you.”
“Perhaps you’re right.” Eve took a sip of her drink and curled her lip. “This is awful. Did you use instant coffee?”
“I ran out of the good stuff.”
“Remind me to get some more. If we’re going to put in the time, we’ll need sustenance.”
Jill sunk down on a couch. “So who’s your main suspect?”
“So far? Everyone.”
“That narrows it down.”
“Spare me the clichés, please.” Eve pushed her sleeves back. “We have to think like professionals and throw logic out the window. It serves no purpose in a murder investigation.”
Jill dangled her foot over the armrest. “And you read that in the quick guide to solving a mystery?”
“It stands to reason. I’m going to start by discounting career criminals, if there is such a thing. I’m also going to assume this was a kneejerk reaction killing and not premeditated. It happened because... because of my sudden appearance on the island. So the killer is a regular person.” She gave a firm nod. “People who suddenly turn to killing someone are likely to act out of fear or impulse. Therefore, they’d have no immediate justifiable reason. Nothing we would see as logical. The act could possibly be an accident but, I insist, not premeditated.” She tapped her chin. “My money’s on... Let me think...”
“Abby Larkin,” Jill offered. “She has the most to gain by a windfall. With you out of the picture, she could endear herself to Mira, get in her good books, pardon the pun, and stand to inherit the lot.”
“Now you’re thinking like me.” Eve couldn’t imagine anyone being so devious. Although... “That might not be as wild as it sounds. Abby said the island needed to draw attention. What better way than to have a murder take place here?”
“Right. Because someone looking to buy a business will be drawn by the notorious reputation of an otherwise dull little island,” Jill said.
“It’s not so far fetched. She killed Alex just because the murder would get a mention in the papers and not necessarily because she wanted to frame me. I think she actually likes me.”
“You sound needy.”
Eve rolled her eyes. “Where are those donuts you bought?”
Jill waved the bakery bag. “Do you have any friends outside the island who might want you out of the picture?”
Eve gave an impatient shrug. “Nope.”
“Is that a no to friends or a no to friends with ulterior motives?”
All the friends she’d made at school had gone on to successful professional careers
